Russians? Really?
This ranks low on the list of reasons why Indiana Jones 4 failed miserably. Besides holes in the story, and a failure of a climax (lacking any conflict whatsoever), the thing more annoying than Cate Blanchett’s accent (and certainly more forced) was replacing the Nazi enemies (that we’ve grown to love to hate over the past twenty-six years and previous three Indiana Jones movies), with the Russians in the fourth installment.
When asked why the decision was made to make the Russians Indiana Jones’ enemy, Spielberg replied, “First off, I am Russian. My descendants were from Ukraine. However, when we decided the fourth installment would take place in 1957, we had no choice but to make the Russians the enemies. World War II had just ended and the Cold War had begun. The U.S. didn’t have any other enemies at the time.”
This is equivalent to someone telling off-color jokes, and qualifying, “I can say that joke, because I’m [insert race in question]“. Apparently, I’m not the only one who found this executive decision abrasive. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to see a Nazi in a movie more. Not to mention the fact that Hitler and the Nazis were more interested in the paranormal realms (that this movie attempts to delve into) than the cold-war Russians. Just another failure to strengthen the story before any frames were shot, or animated.
Communist Party members in St. Petersburg said on a web site this week that the Soviet Union in 1957 “did not send terrorists to the States,” but launched a satellite, “which evoked the admiration of the whole world.”
Moscow Communist lawmaker Andrei Andreyev said, “It is very disturbing if talented directors want to provoke a new Cold War.”
I guess he didn’t want to name names.
